Not Doing Sh*t

September 9, 2019

Physical inactivity is the FOURTH leading cause of death in the U.S... and the way my life is set up right now, I'm headed toward the grave!

Did ya'll know choosing to not do shit everyday can lead to

  • Cancer

  • Anxiety & Depression (I think our generation suffers from that enough already)

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • Heart Disease

  • Obesity

  • High Cholesterol

Mmmmm... thanks, but no thanks. I'm cool...

So the reason I'm bring this is up, is because I've become one of those people who have chosen to not do shit for the last 3 months. Let me tell you about my daily routine since I've graduated from my master's program.  I get up, I get dressed, then walk about 3 blocks to Boston's public transit system. I walk another 2 blocks to the office, and then I get to work and sit in the same spot (except for bathroom and food breaks) for about 9 to 10 hours a day.

Then walk the two blocks back to the train to go home. I walk three more blocks, and I'm back in my house cooking, watching  Netflix, and sleeping until tomorrow.

Seeing it written out like that.... I'm sitting here like sis, that is ridiculous!!!!

But the crazy part, is I'm not that different from most working Americans. According to the World Health Organization, 25% of y'all are right there with me! I'm still trying to figure out where people get the energy to go run on a treadmill after a 10 hour day!

And its not even about losing weight or looking good for the summer. Its about whats going on inside. This is the type of inactivity that becomes a habit people can't break, and its not like I have kids or pets that are blocking me from working out. The thing is that I'm still burnt

out from high school and college athletics, so the treadmill in a crowded gym isn't appealing. But I'm realizing that what I'm currently doing literally isn't an option anymore. So I'm starting to find different types of activities that will get my up off the couch.

So, what are some active things that you can do that don't feel like working out? Well, this past weekend I went hiking with some friends, which was great because

1. it was free

2. it didn't feel like working out even though we climbed 3 miles, and

3. it was beautiful, so i got some great Instagram pics!

I'm definitely going to continue to challenge myself to do more things like that every week, because this not doing shit really isn't working for me anymore. So for all the people like me that wanna stay healthy, but don't want it to feel like work, get creative and do something with friends. Just get up, because life will catch up with you if you don't.
